We feel the effects of living in a time of pandemic, the lack of uncertainty about how to care for those who have the virus. The daily news reports the numbers infected, the deaths and those cured. Our work load reflects the numbers of families touched by death. What we don’t see is the names and the faces of the deceased and the families who were unable to be present with their loved ones in the final stages of their life. We get a glimpse of the families as we help them find a resting place. We see the faces as we prepare them for cremation. We hear the names when they call to schedule a burial.
Some of us may even get to hear the story about how or where they died. We get a glimpse into the final weeks of their lives. What we don’t often get to hear is their story, how they lived and the ways that they changed the world. We may read a death notice and glean a bit about the size of their family but we don’t know the difference their lives made. What I offer to you this week is a prayer…
Oh, divine Master you have allowed me to share in the final journey for your servant, may my work this day honor their lives and comfort their families. May the way I use my talents in some way ease the grief of their loved ones and may my labor be pleasing to You. Mindful of Your mercy I pray You bring them to the place of peace that You have prepared for them. Amen.
